A young king from Macedonia named Alexander marched all the way to the river Indus. There, on a rainy day, he met King Porus on a war elephant. Alexander won, but was so impressed by Porus's courage that he let him keep his kingdom.

Alexander III of Macedon crossed the Hindu Kush in 327 BCE and defeated King Porus at the Battle of the Hydaspes (326 BCE) on the Jhelum river. His weary troops refused to march further east, and he turned back. His campaign left Indo-Greek kingdoms in the northwest for centuries and set the stage for Chandragupta Maurya's rise.
