The Cold War Space Race began with Sputnik in 1957. India joined the space club in 1975 with Aryabhata, launched by a Soviet rocket, and by 1980 launched its own satellite on SLV-3. In 2014 Mangalyaan reached Mars on its first attempt — cheaper than the Hollywood film 'Gravity'. In 2023, Chandrayaan-3 landed near the lunar south pole.
